Thinking about taking up target shooting?
You don’t need to know a member, own a pistol or have any experience. Adults and juniors aged 12 and over are welcome to arrange a supervised introduction on the air pistol range and find out whether the sport suits them. Come on your own, with a partner or as a family.
CLDPC is a volunteer-run sporting club focused on developing participation in the sport of target shooting. Our introductory sessions are intended for people considering ongoing involvement in the sport and are conducted by experienced club members. Those seeking a one-off shooting experience will generally be better served by one of the commercial ranges operating in Sydney.
Introductory sessions
Your first experience of pistol shooting
No licence. No equipment. Just an interest in the sport.
Your introduction includes the required paperwork, a safety course and supervised air pistol shooting. We supply the pistol, pellets, targets and protective equipment, and an instructor stays beside you while you shoot.

Air pistol is where everyone starts, including the members now shooting the outdoor matches. Once you join, the rest of the programme opens up to you.
Book ahead, and allow two to three hours
Sessions run by appointment and places are limited, so every participant books in advance — we are not able to accommodate walk-ins. Your first visit includes paperwork and a safety course as well as shooting, so please allow two to three hours for the full introduction.
Speak with a club official beforehand to arrange a suitable session and confirm what to bring. Adults need photographic identification. A junior needs a parent or legal guardian with them, who supplies the photo identification and signs the consent, plus proof that the junior is over 12. We’ll explain all of it before you visit.
On the range
What does air pistol actually feel like?
Air pistol shooting is quiet and deliberate. You aim at a target 10 metres away, concentrating on holding steady and making a controlled shot.
Your instructor will explain each step and stay beside you while you shoot. You’ll have time to ask questions, practise and become comfortable on the range.
You don’t have to be good at it on your first visit. The enjoyment comes from learning something new and seeing your shots improve.
Before you book
Are you eligible?
Before taking part in an introductory shooting session, you must complete a NSW Police P650 Declaration and produce photographic identification — the form asks for a driver licence or passport.
For a junior aged 12 to 17, the P650 works differently: the junior completes and signs the declaration, and the parent or legal guardian supplies the photographic identification and signs the consent section. The club official has to be satisfied that has been done.
The club also needs proof that the junior is over 12 — a passport or birth certificate. If you have neither, talk to us before booking about what else we can accept.
Participation is only available to people who can truthfully answer NO to every declaration question below. A YES answer to any question may make you ineligible to participate.
- Within the last 10 years, been the subject of a Family Law or Domestic Violence Order, or an Apprehended Violence Order (other than one that was revoked)?
- Been refused or prohibited from holding a firearms licence or permit, or had one suspended, cancelled or revoked?
- Currently suffering from any mental illness or other disorder that may prevent you from using a firearm safely?
- Within the last 10 years, been convicted of an offence involving firearms, weapons, prohibited drugs, robbery, violence, terrorism or an offence of a sexual nature — or have a conviction pending?
- Been the subject of a Firearms Prohibition Order?
- Ever attempted suicide or self-harm?
- Currently subject to a Good Behaviour Bond?
- Currently subject to an Interim Apprehended Violence Order?
- In the past 12 months, been treated or referred for treatment for alcoholism, drug dependence, or a mental illness within the meaning of the Mental Health Act 2007, or as a mentally disordered person within the meaning of that Act?
Introductory sessions are conducted by appointment and places are limited. All participants must book in advance. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

On the day
What actually happens
Paperwork and identification
We check your identification and take you through the required declaration. A parent or guardian completes the required consent for junior participants.
Safety course
Everyone completes the safety course before shooting. We explain safe handling, range commands and what to expect, with time for questions and the required assessment.
Supervised shooting
Your instructor stays beside you while you shoot, helping you put the lesson into practice and become familiar with the sport. The club supplies the shooting equipment.
What to expect
Quieter than you are imagining
If you’re picturing noise and adrenaline, a visit to the air pistol range may surprise you. Indoors and air-conditioned, it is a place for concentration, patience and careful practice.
A range officer oversees shooting, and everyone follows clear safety procedures and range commands. During your introduction, an instructor stays beside you and explains what to do.
You don’t need previous shooting experience or your own equipment. Speak with us before your visit to arrange a session and confirm the eligibility and identification requirements.
